Protect Yourself: How to Spot and Avoid Skimmers
Mar 21, 2025 || By Stacey Jorgensen, Director, Risk and Compliance Services

Local police have reported skimmers being found at gas stations across the Quad Cities, making it more important than ever to stay vigilant when using your debit or credit card. These sneaky devices can steal your card details, leading to identity theft or financial fraud.
But don’t worry, we’ve got your back! Here’s what you need to know to spot and avoid skimmers before they put your finances at risk.
What are skimmers?
Skimmers are small devices secretly attached to ATMs, ITMs, gas pumps, or other card readers. They look like normal card slots but are designed to capture your card information when you swipe or insert your card. Some even include fake keypads to record your PIN.
How to spot a skimmer
Next time you use your card at a gas station, ATM, or any payment terminal, take a moment to inspect the machine. Look for these red flags:
- Loose or misaligned card reader – If the reader looks out of place, doesn’t align properly, or feels loose, it may have been tampered with. Skimmers are often placed on top of real card readers to steal data.
- Damaged or unusual card slot – Check for tape, glue residue, or cracks around the slot. A legitimate card reader should have a smooth, seamless design.
- Inconsistencies in the keypad – If the buttons feel spongy, sticky, or unusually thick, there could be a fake keypad designed to capture your keystrokes.
- Odd instructions or messages – Be cautious of unusual prompts, such as messages instructing you to re-enter your PIN or swipe your card multiple times.
What to do if you suspect a skimmer
If something seems off, trust your instincts! Here’s what you should do:
- Avoid using the machine – Try a different ATM or pump.
- Notify the business or bank – Report any suspicious findings to the staff.
- Monitor your accounts – Keep an eye on your transactions for any unauthorized charges.
- Use contactless payments – Tap-to-pay and mobile wallets are safer alternatives.
