The Credit Union Difference: We Can Help with That

Sep 30, 2024 || By Jamie Olson, Assistant Branch Manager

So much of what we do every day has become digital. Shopping, streaming videos, communicating … even our homes are equipped with security systems and appliances with digital controls. Apps just make everything easier (not to mention on-demand), and banking is no exception. Although IHMVCU makes online banking a breeze, we still have real branches with real people ready to help you — and I’d argue that’s one of the biggest perks of being part of a credit union.

Think about it. When was the last time you heard someone say, “Wow, my commercial bank was really there for me when I needed it?”

I’m guessing it’s few and far between. Don’t get me wrong, big banks serve a purpose. They’re easily accessible from pretty much anywhere you go and are certainly a great option to keep your money safe. But when it comes to customer service, they’re no match for a credit union.

Take it from someone who spent nine years with one of the big banks.

As a personal banker, I was only able to scratch the surface of helping my customers during my time there. I’d never even seen a customer’s credit report until I became a Credit Union Certified Financial Counselor at IHMVCU. Now, I’m very fortunate to be able to take a deep dive into a member’s credit history and help them find ways to reach their financial best. And I get to do it every day, with people right here in my own community!

Even those of us who work in the financial industry can benefit from the incredible services of a credit union. A while ago, I found myself racking up more debt than I care to admit, so I worked with another financial coach to brainstorm my options (as the old saying goes, two heads are better than one). We ran some numbers and twenty minutes later I was ready to consolidate my debt using a home equity loan. Thankfully, my situation improved in just a few short months — all because of the guidance and care from the team at my credit union.

The credit union difference can also be felt throughout our larger community. In fact, it’s a core part of who we are at IHMVCU. We’re member-owned and actively involved in donating our time back into the communities we serve, along with maintaining a commitment to serving areas with significant gaps in services. We’re proud to support local students through scholarships, and often partner with local groups and non-profits to provide resources that help encourage personal and professional development.

With International Credit Union Day coming up on October 17, I invite you to celebrate with us. Come for the free popcorn, and while you’re here, don’t forget to schedule a checkup with a financial coach! We’re truly here to help in every aspect of life. If you don’t have the best credit, we can help you with that. If you’re ready to purchase your dream home, we can help you with that. If you’re ready to empower your financial future, guess what? We can help you with that!
